THE GOALS OF PEOPLE FIRST OF SLO
- To speak up and out for ourselves and others
- To understand our rights and responsibilities as citizens
- To look for ways to improve the lives of people with disabilities
- To raise funds to support our community
- To promote individual choice and self-determination for all people
- To communicate with other People First organizations
ACCOMPLISMENTS OF PEOPLE FIRST OF SLO
Accomplishments of People First of SLO include:
- Started self-advocacy groups in San Luis Obispo County in 1987 with the Advocates for a Better Tomorrow
- Advocated for better transportation which resulted in the development of the CIP Transportation Service
- Working with Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee, they promoted AB 18 – The Warren Mattingly Signature Stamp Act, which improved voter access for people with disabilities
- Collaboration with the City of San Luis Obispo to install curb cuts to improve access for individuals in wheelchairs
- Voter drives to register voters and educating votes of the issues through League of Woman Voters
WE CONTINUE TO ACHIEVE
- Support resuming the People First meetings at PathPoint
- Monitor transportation services in San Luis Obispo County
- Identify locations for curb cuts in the community
- Identifying other People First groups and reaching out to them
- Organizing a local gathering for social interaction
- Planning a seminar on self-advocacy in San Luis Obispo
- Making donations to nonprofit organizations in the community
